Enhanced Vulnerability Capacity Assessment (eVCA)
Facilitator Training
Hosted in Guyana on June 19 - 23, 2023
The Enhanced Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (eVCA) and Nature-Based solutions training of trainers (ToT) workshop was aimed at equipping Red Cross staff and volunteers of stakeholders who are engaged in community resilience building, with the knowledge and skills necessary to accompany and empower local communities to lead the process of understanding and reducing their risks to enhance their ability to anticipate, prepare for and reduce the impacts of hazards while incorporating the value of nature.
As part of this 6-day workshop, trainers undertook an actual eVCA in a vulnerable community as well as prepared and submitted a final report.

Learning Objectives:
-
Understand the concepts of vulnerability, capacity, and resilience: Participants will be able to define and explain the concepts of vulnerability, capacity, and resilience, and how they relate to the process of risk assessment and the development of strategies for disaster risk reduction in local communities.
-
Facilitate the Vulnerability Capacity Assessment (VCA) process: Participants will gain the skills to effectively lead and facilitate a VCA in community settings, engaging local stakeholders to identify key hazards, vulnerabilities, and capacities, and translating these findings into actionable community-driven resilience plans.
-
Integrate Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) into community resilience strategies: Participants will develop the ability to incorporate NBS into community resilience building, understanding the ecological, social, and economic benefits of these solutions, and how to advocate for and implement them in practical, culturally relevant ways.
-
Empower communities to lead risk reduction processes: Participants will learn how to empower and support local communities in leading their own risk reduction efforts, fostering ownership of the process, building local leadership, and promoting sustainable practices to enhance community resilience.
-
Enhance the understanding of climate change and disaster risk reduction (DRR) linkages: Participants will deepen their knowledge of how climate change affects vulnerability and risk, and how integrating nature-based solutions can contribute to mitigating these impacts while enhancing disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts.
